- 5 Conclusion, Which One Is Best?
Okay here’s the deal, Ecosa & Koala are the two best mattress’s in a box in the world by far. I’ve tried them both, and I will never be going back to a normal bed ever again. I struggled with bad back issues for years, and this style of mattress has all but eliminated that problem
Now I’m sure you’ve clicked on this article because you’ve already made the decision to purchase one, bu you're not sure exactly which one you should choose, well you're in luck. I’ve owned both, slept in both and have purposely torn apart both (for research of course) to see whats inside and what makes them so fantastic.
In this post, we’ll provide an all-encompassing rundown of both the Ecosa & Koala mattress’s, including an explanation of why they're a great choice for your next sleeping option, how to figure out which one is best for you), and my unbiased review of which one I love the most and think is the best value for money.
Lets get into it!
“I purchased my Ecosa mattress a few weeks ago and all I can say is "wow" It is literally the best thing I have ever slept on.”
What Even Is A Mattress In A Box? (and Why Does it Matter)
Well I’m glad you asked! A mattress in a box is a new style of bed that is usually made from polyurethane foam or memory foam and can quite literally be rolled up into a box for easy shipping.
Unlike conventional ones that use springs like its still the 1950’s, or like the Eva mattress these beds use advanced foam technology to not only provide better and more comfortable support for your back, but they are far more durable and can last much longer than normal mattress’s.
I've personally used these styles of beds for years now and used to suffer from chronic back pain and ever since I switched, slowly over time my back pain faded away without a trace, which is something I’m sure a lot of you are looking for.
Koala vs Ecosa
The first key thing to note here is that both of these brands are 100% Australian made. Koala is a relatively new Australian brand, while Ecosa is a little bit older (literally by a few months, they were both released in 2015). Both of these are widely available in Australia and the brands provide free shipping and returns throughout Australia
Another primary point of difference is the structure and mechanism of these two mattresses. Koala mattresses come with an all-foam design. They use Kloducell technology to provide better back support. On the other hand, Ecosa has a custom Eco-tex foam, memory foam, and a high-density support foam layer throughout the design.
Which do I Prefer?
In my personal opinion I prefer the Ecosa as the overall price is cheaper and it just has a more comfortable feeling when lying on my back and my side, not to say the Koala doesn't have fantastic benefits, but every body is different and is tuned a different way, which is why I've detailed and stripped down the best of them both, so you can make the decision yourself on which one you would prefer
Both Mattress Offer Fantastic Design & features
Which one is for you? Well keep reading to find out!
Firmness and comfort
Both these mattresses offer comfort like you never experienced before. They are firm yet comfortable enough to make you fall asleep quickly. The Koala offers a hyper-soft foam comfort layer right on top of the firmer foam layer, thus providing the appropriate combination of firmness and softness
The ecosa uses a triple layer foam design similar to the Koala design but has an amazing pin hole design that always for a great deal of airflow throughout the mattress. This is great at the bed feels a lot cooler during the warmer months as it allows heat to dispense through the night, making for a better sleeping experience, especially in an Australian summer!
When it comes to comfort level, Koala hits the bull's eye. It offers a single firmness option. The mattress scores 6.1 on the firmness scale. This means it is neither too soft nor too firm. It also means the Koala is ideal for all types of sleepers. It doesn’t matter whether you sleep on your back, side, or front – you get optimal support from the top layer from all corners of the design.
The Koala uses Eco foam foam, which is undoubtedly, one of the best foams available right now. No matter how much you twist or turn while sleeping, it won’t affect your partner's sleep. Overall, Koala manages to balance firmness and comfort flawlessly.
The Ecosa also isn’t far behind when it comes to providing adequate comfort. In fact, once you lie down on a Ecosa mattress, you will feel three comfort levels. This is because of the three support layers underneath. The foam layer on top cradles your joints and helps you to relax your shoulders, head, and hips as soon as you lie down.
The only point where Ecosa edges ahead of the Koala is when it comes to standard foam variations. You have three options to choose from: firm, medium & medium firm, something that the Koala doesn't offer. The Ecosa allows you to choose your firmness level instead of giving you only one choice, which is great for someone like me who is very picky when it comes to beds either been to soft or to hard.

Material and build
There is a distinctive difference in how these mattresses look. In fact, there is a difference in their build quality also, but as we know, looks aren’t everything You will find a similarity between these two apart from the fact that they allow you to sleep comfortably. Both the mattresses use GECA-approved foam. This means both Koala and the Ecosa maintain the environmental standards while making these mattresses.
The Koala contains two types of foam: a breathable Eco foam layer at the bottom that offers appropriate firmness. The top consists of a soft Kloudcell topper that provides adequate softness. Koala's Kloudcell technology makes the entire mattress breathable so that it disperses heat efficiently which is perfect for hot sleepers like myself. It keeps your mattress cool even during the scorching summer heat, which is a pretty common occurrence in Australia as you know
Alternatively, you will feel slightly warm when you lie down on the same bed during winter. This feature also contributes to reducing energy in your home as it can trap warmth during winter and disperse heat during summer, meaning you won’t need that energy sucking air con or heater running nearly as much.
Build quality vs a normal mattress
The Koala mattress also provides plenty of bounce that no other foam mattress or normal spring mattress can offer. Although it doesn’t contain pocket springs, it certainly covers up for it with its adequate bounce making you feel as if you are sleeping on a memory foam mattress
Ecosa mattresses are also terrific because of their premium quality foam. The materials inside the bed complement one another so that they combine to provide the comfort your body needs. Its upper foam sits tightly in harmony with the underlining foam to give the bouncy effect. This also allows the mattress to last for years. You cannot complain about its build quality either. Its non-generic, curated design means it will not show signs of wear and tear. Even if it does, you can make the most of its 10-year warranty.
Price and value for money
Okay so this is really what you're wanting to know, how much do they cost?
I was very price conscious when buying my first mattress in a box, but I can tell you this, it will be one of the best investments for not only your body, but your mind, that you will ever make. Slumbering off into an uninterrupted sleep is one of the best ways to treat your body and mental health, something that most spring mattress’s just can’t seem to quite perfect.
It is easy to think that with so many incredible features, both these brands will have a price that's far beyond your reach. But honestly, they fall well within the price range of mattresses you usually use. Let's take a look at some of the prices of Koala mattresses according to its different sizes:
Get the Koala mattress here.
Koala also offers Zipmoney and Afterpay. This means you can buy a queen-sized Koala mattress for only $21.59 a week with 0% interest. Effectively, it will be a year-long installment program with the lowest possible amount you can afford to pay weekly.
Get the Ecosa mattress here.
Although the Ecosa may seem expensive up front, you need to understand that it offers customized firmness. Moreover, its technology allows the mattress to adapt to the memory foam layers, which no other mattress can to date.
Both the mattresses fall within the mid-tier price range, making them affordable for the vast majority of people. But when you compare them with other cheaper mattresses, you should understand that these offer a lot more than the cheaper counterparts. With decade-long warranties and more than 100 nights of sleep trials, it is fair to say that the price evens out.
Also, both the companies provide removable washable covers so that you don’t have to worry about the mattresses getting dirty. All you need to do is take out the cover, wash it, dry it, and put it back on the mattress again.
One thing that you have to remember, as well as I did, is that bad sleeping habits caused by cheap and nasty mattress’s can result in back, neck and even shoulder pains, so It’s always a wise idea to invest in quality if you can afford it.
My Experience With Koala
A fantastic feature to your bedroom at a affordable price
Koala is light sleeping on a cloud that you never want to let go of.
Okay so you’re probably wondering what these mattress’s actually feel like. After spending a few short weeks sleeping on the double sized koala mattress, I noticed one simple thing, why weren't these invented along time ago! The pure definition of comfort is this particular mattress.
I was always a slow sleeper, meaning it always took me close to an hour before I would drift off into noddy land, but the koala cut that time in half. I would always toss and turn, trying to find the perfect position on a conventional spring bed, but no matter what side you're sleeping on, if you’re a back or front sleeper, it always feels comfortable. I never had any issues with trying to find that perfect position as the foam almost gels to your body, wrapping itself around you, and locking you in for the best sleep you will ever experience.
Think of it this way, have you ever tried to sit in a bean bag, to only have to constantly move around all the time, never getting that perfect comfort you want, but then one day you just jump onto the thing and BOOM! The bean bag just wraps itself around your body and it’s perfect, that's what the koala mattress feels like every time you lay on it.
I have had unintended sleep for the past few months since using this mattress, and have started waking up feeling more refreshed than ever before. If you're someone who has trouble getting to sleep, constantly wakes up during the night, or you just hate your old worn out spring built bed, then the koala mattress is for you!
My Experience With Ecosa
One of the best things I have ever slept on
Ecosa have taken it to the next level with their designs.
Now you might be thinking, you just gave a glowing review for the Koala mattress, surely you must think the Ecosa is second best, No, the Ecosa has features that the Koala doesn't, making it completely different in design and level of comfort.
Ecosa have done a fantastic job of identifying that every person is different in terms of how they sleep and their sleeping patterns. With the Ecosa, there are 3 different levels of firmness that you can choose from, something the Koala doesn't have. When I decided to purchase one to try it out, I chose the medium firm option, as I like my mattress’s to be soft, but no so soft that I just sink into it.
Just like the other brand, the amount of time it took me to fall asleep dropped drastically, allowing to to get to sleep quicker, and giving me more time to rest (who doesn't love sleeping more?) One of the focal points of this mattress is the airflow that has been built throughout. I noticed that on warmer night the mattress was far cooler than a normal spring built one, and during the cooler months it tended to trap a level of warmth throughout the mattress that made it so much more comfortable to sleep in, eliminating the need for the air conditioner or heater to be on.
This mattress also has a solid amount of movement isolation, which the Koala has as well, but I noticed it was so much more prominent on the Ecosa. What this essentially means is that if there are two of you sleeping in the same bed, and one person happens to be a restless sleeper and tosses and turns throughout the night, it will usually only affect the movement on their side of the mattress, not yours (unless you are the restless sleeper) which just ads to the uninterrupted sleep you can get.
Waterproof! yes you read that right.
Another feature that I noticed (by accident) is the Ecosa is completely water proof. How do they do this you may ask? It comes with a cover that contains microfilaments that not only protects the mattress from water spills but also does a great job at protecting the mattress from bacteria and dust mites.
I found that when I used this product over a period of time, my upper back problems that I suffered from for quite a while had all but vanished, and I found myself sleeping on my back more, which I previously never did. The level of comfort was something I’d never experienced before on a mattress, providing quicker, better and overall better sleeping patterns throughout the night, making me feel more awake and alert when waking up, simply put, just outstanding in every way possible.
Although the Ecosa may be a bit more expensive than it’s competitors, it comes jam packed with unique features which the other just don’t. If you have the money to spare, then it’s an investment you wont look back on.
Is It Really Worth Buying One?
The short answer, absolutely. You really cant put a price on getting a great night sleep. While the price of these mattress’s is obviously a bit higher than cheaper spring mattress’s, it’s an investment for your future. Both of these products come bundled with a 10 year and 15 year warranty and Ecosa comes with a 100 night trial and Koala comes with a 120 night trial, meaning that if the mattress really isn’t for you, you can return it and get a refund, giving you complete piece of mind in the buying process.
And while it can be a big investment at the time, it’s an easy choice when you compare it to say something like a car. You can spend $20,000+ dollars on a new car and it may only last 15 years, while these high quality mattress can cost under $1000 and last 15+ years, and you spend far more time in your bed than in your car, so it’s without a doubt on of the best purchases you will ever make.
Conclusion, Which One Is Best?
If I had to give my unbiased opinion on which one is better for the vast majority of people, I would say the Ecosa mattress is the winner out of the two. The main reason been is the jam packed features that they build into their designs. The waterproof cover, natural airflow design which makes the mattress cool during summer and warm during winter, the 3 firmness design, which koala dosen’t have, and just the level of back support and comfort that the Ecosa provides far outweighs its competitors.
Not to say that the Koala mattress wasn’t a fantastic mattress to sleep on, but considering the Ecosa is barley any more expensive than the Koala, and for the amount of features and customisation that you get with the Ecosa, it just comes out on top in almost every way.
If you’re after a new mattress that provides the level of comfort and durability that you'd expect from a high end mattress, then the Ecosa is the perfect choice for you. I’ve had mine now for 4 months and haven’t looked back since. If youre looking for a bit more variety and want to read about a different brand, you can ready our sleeping duck mattress review here.
